Emotional Resilience - David's Story

What is REBT?

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is an action-oriented psychotherapy that teaches individuals to identify, challenge, and replace their self-defeating thoughts and beliefs with healthier thoughts that promote emotional well-being and goal achievement.

Case Study - Before

David catches the train to work, this has become a major cause of frustration and stress for him. Everyday he approaches the railway station hoping the train will be on time. On a Wednesday morning he arrives at the station and sees the train has been delayed, his thoughts then become irrational:

  • It can't be late again!

  • Now I'm going to be late for work.

  • I can't stand being late, this always happens to me.

  • My manager is going be furious.

  • I'll never be able to catch up on the work now and so I'll have to stay late.

David's stress levels rise and he becomes angry, he feels like shouting at the railway staff. The result is David has let his irrational thinking get the better of him, which then has a detrimental impact on his well-being.

Case Study - After

After using REBT techniques David can control his emotions and come up with logical solutions, this can be applied to a variety of different situations. Now when David approaches the station he knows the train will be on time...because he checked online before even leaving the house. He learned that the train being on time was out of his control, the irrational thoughts that he had were not true, its unfortunate that the train is late but getting angry does not get him to work on time. Immediately he reduced his levels stress which in-turn reduced his anxieties in the morning. David now knows that if the train is late he can drive to work instead.

What if the problem persist?

David's thought process and the results could have had a detrimental impact on his health. Stress is caused when someone believes that demands which are put on them actually exceed their ability to cope with it. Stress is often associated with an increase in health problems, these can include; migraines, angina, asthma, ulcers, high blood pressure and heart attacks. By acknowledging his stress triggers, David began to cope with even the most demanding situations that he dealt with everyday.

Benefits

David is able to reduce his stress levels and anxiety, this has a beneficial impact on his general health and well-being. In turn his work performance improves and his organisation sees these additional benefits. The skills he has learnt also ensures that he can apply it to various situations in his work and personal life.
