Self-confidence is the courage to know yourself, believe in yourself, and act on your beliefs. Self-confidence is often felt as a positive emotion about oneself and the world that leads to purposeful actions born out of a sense of self-respect. Whether someone demonstrates self-confidence by being decisive, trying new things, or staying in control when things get difficult, a person with high self-confidence seems to live life with passion and enthusiasm. Generally people tend to trust and respect confident individuals, which helps them build even more self-confidence – and so the cycle continues.

Self-confident people seem at ease with themselves and their work. They invite trust and inspire confidence in others. These are all attractive characteristics to have. But it's not always easy to be confident in yourself, particularly if you're naturally self-critical or if other people put you down. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to increase and maintain your self-confidence.

There are many different ways of developing self-confidence. The approach we use is known as ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). You might have heard of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) or REBT (Rational Emotional Behaviour Therapy), both of these are considered 2nd generation psychologies and were developed in the 50's and 60's. ACT is known as a 3rd generation psychology and was developed in the 80's and 90's, as a result it is sometimes referred to as a 'modern day psychology for present day problems'. On this course we also use the Choice Point is a visual ACT tool developed by Dr Russ Harris which can help you can make choices and decisions that will work for you in your quest to develop better self-confidence.
